Beach Volleyball Beach Volleyball Malthouse Tuesday Beach Volleyball League for Mixed teams (run by MGC) Rules:   Played on Women’s height net (2.24 m)  4 aside, Mixed teams can have maximum of 2 men on court at any time. ( teams can be all women ) Players can only play for ONE team in this league.   If you are short of players, play with 3,’ build a bridge’ and recruit some from Thursday nights at the stadium.  Players do NOT have to be registered until 2011. Cost: $5 per player per game. ( minimum $20 a team)  Pay the referee BEFORE the game 40 minute games, Best of 3 sets to 21 points ( 2 pt advantage) or, if tied, total points for/against ratio. If still tied !!?? Paper, scissors, rock !!  Please be early  so you are “on time”  ready to start immediately. Change ends every 10 points and end of sets to even up the effect of wind, sun etc. ONE , 30 second timeout allowed per set and compulsory 1 minute break between sets to swap ends. Players must serve in rotation  order but can move anywhere on court after that. ( unless mutually agreed to  play the Canadian variation of Reverse Mixed Fours where only women can block and spike ) Can rotate players on and off at the serve. ( i.e. after side-out) if you have more than 4 playing. Maximum of 3 touches ( including the block touch ) allowed.  The ball must be rebound cleanly and cannot be caught, thrown, carried etc. Multiple contacts are allowed on each first “hit” of the ball on your side as long as it is part of “one action” and not two separate attempts at hitting the ball. ( this means every time the ball comes into your court, not just from the serve) Subsequent contacts must be “clean” if playing a shot overhead with the fingers and excessive spin ( more than 2 rotations of the ball) will be penalised as “double contact”  Therefore, it is often safer to forearm pass to set the ball up for spiking rather than risk it overhead. Some common rules clarified:  Open hand tip shots ( with fingers) are allowed in 4 aside ( you do not have to “knuckle” or “dink” the ball as in Pairs.     You cannot touch any part of the net, but can step under the net as long as you don’t interfere with an opposition player.          On the line is IN. (clearly, if the ball touches the line/rope/tape it is IN )        You must serve with one hand from anywhere behind the baseline.  Foot on or over the baseline rope is a fault.  ( You cannot serve from the top of or any part of the bank!  ) Only the team captain can talk ( respectfully ) to the referee and then only to seek clarification of a ruling. Captains cannot dispute handling judgement or question the referee’s judgement of in or out.                     It is hoped that these games would be played in a sporting way and players would admit net touches, touches off the block and in/out calls, etc.  accepting the referees calls and respecting their opposition.  However; Players not behaving in the spirit of fairplay: complaining about calls, questioning decisions, making negative or rude comments etc  can expect to be sanctioned according to the FIVB rules ( Download from:  )        It makes no difference  whether swearing or abuse is directed at Referee, opposition, team mates or just “no one”.                                                                                                    In brief: for low level bad behaviour.  A verbal warning ( No Penalty).      For repeated , after warning, low level behaviour. A YELLOW card ( point and/or serve awarded to the other team.) If repeated again by the same player.  A RED card ( point and the player is expelled for the rest of that set. )   The referee may judge the behaviour to be rude or intimidating and go directly to a Yellow or even Red card but of course we don’t expect that to happen.  Referees will try to control things with verbal warnings early in the match. Other advice for players;  This is a semi-competitive grade suitable for skilled players to have fun and also introduce less skilled friends to the game of beach Volleyball.  Hard-out players should play pairs on Saturday Soft-in players should play Six-aSide Social Sunday League. What to Bring$5 per game each week  Plenty of water and a suitable container.  We have water “on tap” and it is town supply but we’re not guaranteeing the quality. Wear sunscreen.  (  not a big problem in the evening) Wear sunglasses ( or glasses ) at your own risk.  Soft framed ones will just mould to your face if you get hit but others can give nasty cut to the bridge of your nose.  ( I know from repeated experience) There are NO UNIFORM RULES for 4 aside games.  Women do NOT have to wear bikinis of a specified size or at all.  Just wear what you are comfortable in.  Teams are encouraged to get uniform, bright, beachy gear but it’s not compulsory. A smile and a sporting attitude.  Be competitive but be fair. The sand can get very hot ( although unlikely in the evening ) so toughen up your feet or wear sandals, socks ( the kind that DON’T fill with sand) or booties. Jandals not recommended. What not to bring:  NO GLASS anywhere near the venue please. Take your rubbish, empty ( plastic ) drink bottles, Subway wrappers etc. with you when you go Your “mates”. You know;-  Abusive Sammy,  Argumentative Sammy,  Drunk Sammy. NO ALCOHOL PLEASE. Small unattended children who can’t resist playing in the sand and may get trampled. Players under college age ( for this league ) Knee pads: - they don’t work!
