Fairweathers Magnum take out A grade volleyball final
Last Thursday night at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 some exciting games were
contested in the various grade finals and playoffs of Marlborough Volleyball Club’s
Fairweathers’ Competition. The A Grade final saw Fairweathers Magnum who had only
dropped one set all season continue their winning form with a triumphant game over
their nemesis Wayward Spikers. They took the winner’s crown for just the forth time in
the last 13 seasons of play although contesting the final in just 8 of them. Wayward
Spikers ensured an exciting game was played as two pretty evenly matched teams
traded point for point throughout the first set stretching their opponents to fight for an
extra 4 points before Magnum could finally sneak the two point advantage. Set score
28-26. With the first set under their belts Fairweathers Magnum set about building for the
kill confidently sticking to their game plan and reaping the benefits with a fine second set
win, 25-18. With the game won in the first two sets they didn’t ease off as they haven’t all
season although Wayward Spikers tried but in vain to take at least a set in the third.
They couldn’t, set to Fairweathers 25-22 and another good all-round performance. Fiafia
were a no-show for their 3rd/4th playoff so The Boys took the bronze. In the last of the A
grade games No Strings came out of the blocks with a hiss and a roar stunning their
Flamin Mongrels opposition and set a good platform with an 18-25 first set win. Flamin
Mongrels stepped up their game and played the equaliser with much better co-ordination
and team work challenging each point and matching their opponents point for point
requiring one extra to finish the job (26-24) and match their opponents on one set each.
Tried as they may No Strings couldn’t close out the game as Flamin Monkeys avoided
the wooden spoon by taking out the decider 25-20.
In the B grade final Sixes & Sevens finally took a title after the last 6 consecutive
attempts. They got into their stride early against Tree Fellas who did however prove to be
good opponents in the first and last set as some great tussles were fought at the net with
some impressive blocking and good long rallies. First set went narrowly to Sixes &
Sevens 25-22 but the second Tree Fellas went to sleep as 6 & 7’s poured on the points,
25-8. Tree Fellas woke from their slumber and again showed the form they had shown to
qualify for the B grade final and came away with the consolation set 21-25. For their
entertaining and good sportspersonship Sixes and Sevens picked up the Fairweathers
Fair Play Team of the Week Award. Next up a good game was played between MBC
and Just Woodbourne . MBC started well and took out the first set 21-25 despite the
makeshift nature of their team line-up. However they found it hard to break through Just
Woodbourne’s defence and suffered losses in the next two sets; 25-17 and 25-14. Just
Woodbourne securing third spot compared to being cellar-dwellers last season.
Not Sure may have scored the higher points in round-robin play but that didn’t concern
Kinoaths in the C grade final as they leapt out to a massive lead and retained it in the
early set notching up an 11 point differential. Set score 25-14. Not Sure would have
none of it and came back with vengeance reversing the play and almost reaching the
same point difference (10), set score
15-25. With the final all tied-up between these two impressive sides we saw yet another
massive swing in favour of Kinoaths as they took out the set with the emphatic margin of
set one, set score 25-14 and the title their first in over 12 seasons of play and appearing
in just 4 finals during that time. Third/fourth spot was contested between Sefe-Le-Ea and
MGC who took the bronze by being more organised and playing sound volleyball. First
set went to MGC 25-17, Sefe-Le-Ea bounced back to take the equaliser 16-25 and the
pretty determined young ladies bounced back taking the all important final set 25-18.
Westmeat gained their 3rd game of the season to take the 5th spot with a methodical 3
pointer against less experienced Banana Skins. Set points 25-16, 25-20 and 25-18.
In the Mixed grade final spectators witnessed too much skill from MASH who appeared
in their 9th final in the past 16 seasons and having won 6 of them. Last Thursday night
they added to their tally taking the scalp of Safe Air who never gave up in their 3 nil
defeat but on the night were not close. Set points 25-14, 25-15 and 25-10. Spike may
have won third spot over MIA but not before being put to the sword in a tight encounter
which saw many great rallies. In other playoffs both Meaters and Strikers recorded 2 set
to 1 wins over No Balls and Delegats Wine Estate.
Team Wilson were left wondering if perhaps they could have taken the Social grade title.
If only they had clinched the equaliser, the second set after their nemesis Desperate
Housewives took out the 1st 25-22. Team Wilson came up a little short with another very
close 25-22 taken by DH. They did however gain some pride with a 15-25 comeback in
the last set. Desperate Housewives have had 5 appearances for 2 wins in finals over the
past 18 seasons and were delighted to earn the winner’s crown. The A-Team took the
bronze in an emphatic display against The Hard Hitters as did Hardy-Jones Clark
against cellar dwellers Elizah’s Team.
Teams of three players have registered for this Thursday’s popular triples tournament
which will commence for all teams at 6pm. Players are asked to be there at 5.50pm.
Games should conclude at 8.30pm after which prize-giving and refreshments will be laid
on for players by Fairweathers the league sponsors. The competition then has a long
break over the festive season and commences again early February 2011. Beach
Volleyball enthusiasts are encouraged to phone Roy on 027 325 5788
